Our tours are built around a simple travel philosophy: France with Friends. Through our longstanding friendships with local chefs, winemakers, artisans, historians, and private hosts, we introduce you to France through its people as well as its places. Alongside celebrated landmarks, you’ll discover regional traditions, personal stories, and experiences that offer a more intimate understanding of French life and culture. Small groups, knowledgeable professional guides, and thoughtfully planned itineraries create a welcoming atmosphere where conversation, discovery, and meaningful connections are part of every journey.
We specialize exclusively in France, with tours in Provence, the Loire Valley, Bordeaux, Champagne, and Normandy. Each itinerary reflects the distinctive history, landscapes, cuisine, wines, and traditions of its region. We also offer a Signature Specialty Tour that brings several destinations together in one longer journey. Whether you’re drawn to Provençal villages, royal châteaux, prestigious vineyards, or Normandy’s history, our itineraries offer different ways to experience France in depth.
Our tours welcome solo travelers, couples, friends, and families who enjoy cultural discovery, good food, local connections, and the companionship of a small group. Guests include both first-time visitors to France and experienced travelers returning to discover more. You don’t need specialist knowledge of French history, wine, or cuisine—only curiosity and an interest in participating.
We keep our groups small to encourage personal attention, relaxed conversation, and access to intimate venues. Group limits vary by itinerary: our Provence tours welcome a maximum of 16 guests, our Loire Valley tours are designed for 10-12 guests, our Bordeaux tours are limited to 12 guests, our 11-day Signature France Tour is limited to 12-14 guests, and our Normandy and Champagne tours our limited to 10 guests, per tour date . These smaller groups help make the experience sociable and allow us to introduce you personally to our local friends and hosts.
Yes. All France Off the Beaten Path Tours are conducted in English and designed for English-speaking travelers. Our guests come from around the world, with many joining us from the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. You do not need to speak French to enjoy the experience. Our guiding team helps you connect with local hosts and understand the history, traditions, and everyday details that make each region distinctive.
Yes, absolutely. Solo travelers are warmly welcomed alongside couples and friends. Shared discoveries, privately hosted experiences, and group meals offer natural opportunities to get acquainted, while scheduled leisure time allows you to enjoy your own interests. A single supplement applies when you occupy a room on your own; the amount varies by tour and is published on the relevant price and inclusions page.
Our professional guiding teams bring together regional knowledge, historical expertise, engaging storytelling, and personal connections with local people. Depending on your itinerary, their specialties may include French royal history, regional cuisine and wines, art, marine biology, or World War II history. Owner and founder Christy Destremau guides selected departures alongside her colleagues. Each tour’s individual pages introduce the relevant team and the expertise they bring to your experience.
Yes. Our scheduled sightseeing, cultural visits, and immersive experiences are guided by our professional team and, where appropriate, local hosts and specialists. Their knowledge helps you appreciate the stories and traditions behind each experience. The itineraries also include designated leisure time, giving you opportunities to explore independently, browse shops, visit additional attractions, or relax at a café.
No previous experience is necessary. Our tours make learning enjoyable and approachable, whether you’re discovering a subject for the first time or pursuing an established interest. Guides and hosts explain the background, welcome questions, and share their expertise through conversation and participation. From a culinary workshop to a château visit or wine tasting, the emphasis is on enjoying the experience and gaining a deeper appreciation of France.
Walking requirements vary by itinerary, but all guests should be comfortable with daily leisure walking and standing during visits. Historic towns, gardens, vineyards, and cultural sites may involve cobblestones, stairs, gravel, or uneven ground. Our Loire Valley itinerary includes substantial exploration of châteaux and gardens, while Provence and Bordeaux offer certain optional walks. Please review the walking information for your chosen tour and contact us before booking if you have concerns.
Yes. Our Provence and Bordeaux tours are designed to welcome both walkers and guests who prefer other cultural experiences. Where optional walks are offered, the arrangements depend on the itinerary. In Bordeaux, for example, guests may use our vehicle and enjoy cultural alternatives with a guide instead of joining the two optional walks. Everyday walking remains part of the tour, so please contact us beforehand to discuss your needs and the available alternatives.
Yes, please. Understanding your needs before you reserve helps us explain the walking, stairs, terrain, and hotel arrangements relevant to your itinerary. Our tours visit historic places where access and surfaces can vary, so a relaxed pace does not necessarily mean every location will be suitable for every guest. We’ll be happy to discuss the practical details and help you assess whether a particular tour will be comfortable for you.
Yes. Our itineraries combine organized visits and shared experiences with time to enjoy your own interests. Depending on the tour, you may browse local markets, discover shops, visit an additional attraction, linger over coffee, or simply relax at the hotel. The amount and timing of leisure time vary, so the day-by-day itinerary is the best guide when deciding which tour suits your preferred balance of activities and independence.
Yes. You’re welcome to opt out of an excursion to explore independently or enjoy some quiet time. Please speak with your guides in advance so they can explain the day’s arrangements and help coordinate where and how you can rejoin the group. Our Loire Valley and Bordeaux FAQs describe this flexibility, which allows guests to pursue personal interests while remaining mindful of the group’s schedule.
Yes! Our Provence, Loire Valley, Bordeaux, Champagne, and Normandy tours each use one hotel for all five nights, allowing you to unpack once and settle into your surroundings. Daily excursions introduce you to the wider region before returning to your familiar base.
Our 11-Day Signature Specialty Tour, however, travels through multiple regions, and requires an accommodation change each time we change regions and is explained in that individual itinerary.
We select hotels for their comfort, character, and location. Our regional bases include Hôtel Gounod in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, charming four-star boutique accommodations in historic Amboise, and the four-star Hôtel Indigo Bordeaux–Centre Chartrons. Facilities and room configurations vary by property, so please review your tour’s hotel information rather than assuming that every hotel has the same amenities. If a particular feature is important to your comfort, contact us before booking.
Our tour prices bring together accommodations, professional guiding, scheduled sightseeing and immersive activities and excursions, included meals, ground transportation during the tour, and designated group transfers. Admission and participation fees for included itinerary activities are covered, and bottled water is provided daily. The precise meals, experiences, accommodation, and transfer arrangements vary by itinerary. Please read your chosen tour’s price and inclusions page for a complete description of what your reservation includes.
Please allow for travel to and from your tour’s meeting and departure points, meals designated as independent, personal purchases, and gratuities to guides and drivers. Optional activities and separately arranged services may also carry an additional charge. The number of independent meals differs by itinerary, as do any optional experiences. Each tour’s price and inclusions page identifies the exclusions so that you can plan your overall travel budget with confidence.
Yes. Wine and non-alcoholic beverages are included with the group lunches and dinners specified in our tour inclusions. We choose wines that complement the food and introduce you to the region’s character and traditions. These shared meals are an opportunity to enjoy local cuisine, discover unfamiliar wines, and exchange impressions with your fellow travelers. Please consult your itinerary to see which meals are included and which are independent.
Yes. We welcome dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, and gluten-free preferences, as well as accommodate all food allergies. Please provide full details when booking so that we can plan with our chefs, restaurants, and local hosts. If you have a severe allergy or particularly complex requirements, contact us before reserving to discuss the arrangements you need. Our aim is for every guest to enjoy the culinary experiences that are such an important part of our tours.
Designated group transfers are included at the locations and times published for each tour. These arrangements differ by destination: Provence offers scheduled transfers through Marseille Provence Airport and Avignon TGV station, while Loire Valley transfers use Saint-Pierre-des-Corps TGV station. Bordeaux’s included transfers operate through Bordeaux Saint-Jean railway station, rather than the airport. Please check your tour itinerary before purchasing tickets; services outside the scheduled arrangements may require separate booking and payment.
Yes. We’re happy to help with practical guidance for your wider trip, including hotel suggestions and advice about reaching your tour by rail. If you would like to spend additional time in France before or after your departure, contact us to discuss your plans. Advice tailored to your itinerary can help you choose a convenient route and make the most of your time beyond the organized tour.
Your tour information package is sent approximately 30 days before departure. It provides practical details to help you prepare, including instructions for meeting your guides at the designated arrival point. Our regional FAQs (Questions & Answers) also describe packing guidance provided with the package. Please review the information carefully before traveling and contact us if you need clarification about your arrival arrangements or preparations.
Choose comfortable clothing suitable for sightseeing, changing temperatures, and your itinerary’s activities. Supportive walking shoes are particularly important for historic streets and uneven surfaces. Layers and a lightweight waterproof jacket are useful, while a slightly dressier casual outfit is appropriate for group dinners. Pack luggage that you can comfortably manage through airports and railway stations, and consult the packing guidance provided for your tour. Checking the forecast shortly before departure will help you make final adjustments.
Complete our secure online booking form, enter your traveler information and preferences, and submit the required US$1,000 per person tour deposit. Your payment is processed when you submit the booking, and you receive an immediate confirmation email and deposit receipt. We then email an invoice for the remaining balance. Please read the itinerary, inclusions, and booking terms before completing your reservation.
All tour prices and payments are in U.S. dollars. We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and bank transfers. A US$1,000 deposit per person per tour confirms your reservation, and the remaining balance is due no later than 60 days before departure. Once your tour is booked, your tour price is guaranteed for the year in which you participate.
Yes. Payment plans are available for tours booked at least six months before departure. This allows you to secure your place with the required deposit and pay the remaining amount in installments, with the balance paid in full by the applicable deadline. Please contact us at christy@traveloffthebeatenpath.com to discuss a payment schedule for your reservation.

Yes. You may transfer to another available tour before your original tour’s balance payment due date without a transfer penalty, subject to space on the requested departure. This provision excludes custom-designed private tours. Please contact us before making changes to your wider travel arrangements so we can confirm availability and explain any difference in tour price or room supplement. Separate conditions apply when a cancellation travel credit has already been applied to a replacement tour.
For cancellations received 61 or more days before departure, the non-refundable US$1,000 deposit per person is held as a travel credit valid for two years; travel must be completed within two years of its issue date. Cancellations received 60–31 days before departure receive a 50% refund of the tour cost. Cancellations within 30 days, departure-day cancellations, and no-shows receive no refund. Please review our full Terms & Conditions, including the separate restrictions governing travel credits.
Yes. We recommend travel insurance, although it is not required to join our tours. Your policy should suit your circumstances and the arrangements you wish to protect. Read the coverage, exclusions, and claim conditions carefully, and ask the insurer about any specific concerns before purchasing. Our cancellation terms apply regardless of whether you have insurance, and we cannot make exceptions to those policies.
