The Chip & Signature Visa from Chase.  The easiest way to make purchases in France, as a visitor to the country, is to obtain a “chip & signature” visa card before departing on vacation.  Many French shop owners and even larger stores in France use credit card terminals that only accept chip technology based credit cards, meaning their credit card processing terminals are no longer equipped to swipe the magnetic stripe of traditional credit cards.  The new chip & signature card technology adds an extra layer of security to your card transactions. The chip stores the same information as the magnetic stripe, which you usually see on your credit or debit cards. But chip & signature technology encrypts your transaction data, which makes it more difficult for unauthorized users to copy or access your card information.

How do you use the chip & signature card? When you come across a chip-specific credit card terminal, simply insert your card into the slot in the terminal and follow the prompts on the screen. You may still need to sign to authorize the transaction, and as usual you will receive a purchase receipt. If the vendor’s credit card terminal does not accept chip cards, you or the merchant can still swipe the card in exactly the same way as you do today. You can always follow the prompts on the merchant terminal if you aren’t sure whether you should swipe or insert your Card.
